Content: The “2009 Student Culinary Competition for Health and Creativity” held by the Public Health Bureau of Miaoli County took place in Chong Hsing Vocational School at 8 am on the 10th of this month. Students from the food and beverage departments in the county teamed up for the competition. The judges would choose the best three teams for the Top 3 Awards, another three teams for Fine Work Awards and four additional dishes of creative cuisine. The competing groups would make a 6-serving meal of 3 dishes, 1 bowl of soup, 1 major dish and 1 dish of fruits within 3 hours. The grading content involved operational hygiene, principles of health, taste, appearance and creativity. Vegetables and fruits were the choice of materials in the competition, and the rainbow rule (i.e., various colors) should be followed. The judge panel included the world-renowned vegetable and fruit sculpture artist, Prof. Qingche Liao, the junior technical specialist of Miaoli District Agricultural Research and Extension Station, Meiling Yang, the instructor of Miaoli Farmers’ Association, Zhaoe Chen, the trustee of Miaoli Chef Union, Zhaoying Fu, and the representatives from the Bureau.

After the five judges’ fair and just evaluation, the “Three Craftsmen” from Yumin Vocational High School ranked in first place and were awarded a gift coupon of NT$ 12,000. The second and third places winners were the “Yo Yo Men” team from Dachen Senior High School and the “Golden Gourd Jewelry” team from Yumin Vocational High School, winning gift coupons of NT$9,000 and NT$6,000 respectively. Three Fine Work Awards were bestowed to the “Ya Ya Girl” team from Dachen Senior High School, as well as to the “Tomboys” and “Azhong” teams from Chong Hsing Vocational School. A gift coupon of NT$3,000 were granted to each of them. The four creative cuisine dishes were the “Swimming Gold Fish” of the “Grass Residue” team (Long Der Vocational School), the “Combo of Freshness” of the “Cuisine Challenger” team (Yumin Vocational High School), the “Potato-Egg-Veggies” of the “Shedile” team and the “Monascus Sticky Rice” of the “Yiqimei” team (Chong Hsing Vocational School). Each winner of the Creative Cuisine Dish Awards was granted a gift coupon of NT$1,500. Yumin Vocational School, having won the 1st and 3rd places, was the champion of the competition.

The members of the first place winning team are 2nd-grade students of the Food and Beverage Department of Yumin. The dishes that won the prize included “Lust, Caution”, “the Beloved”, “Miaoli Specialties”, the major dish “the Healthy House”, “Encountering with Apple” soup, and “Rainbow” fruit. Each dish was named poetically and prepared with a variety of vegetables and fruits and tasted fresh and delicious.

In the process of preparing the cuisine, participants surprised the audience with their creativity and excellent skills. It is the goal of the competition to inspire chefs-to-be to come up with more creative and yet practical ways to prepare healthy food, using vegetables and fruits, to reinforce their hygienic habits and to bring knowledge into practice. Hopefully, they would provide customers with delicious and healthy cuisine in the future.
